Understand Shelby County ’s Real Estate Market

Shelby County is a county in Tennessee, United States. The population was 929,744 as of the 2020 census. It is the most populous and largest of the state’s 95 counties, both in terms of people and land area. Memphis, Tennessee’s second most populous city and a port on the Mississippi River, serves as the county seat. The county was named after Kentucky Governor Isaac Shelby (1750–1826). Along with Haywood County, it is one of just two surviving counties in Tennessee with a predominantly African American population.

Shelby County is included in the Memphis, TN-MS-AR Combined Statistical Area. The Mississippi River borders it on the west. The county, which is located in the Mississippi Delta, was founded as a hub of cotton plantations during the antebellum era, and cotton remained an important commodity crop far into the twentieth century. This area along the Mississippi River valley has long been inhabited by indigenous peoples of many civilizations. Historically, the Chickasaw ruled over most of this territory. They are said to be descended from the influential Mississippian culture, which built walled and elaborate towns. Cahokia, the biggest of them, was active from from 950CE until the 15th century.
